You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone around that you found the document, contacted a cousin who has the family Bible, made a DNA connection, or found a whole new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.
My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
Attending my first in-person nation conference since RootsTech 2020 was an amazing experience! It was so good to get together in person with old and new friends. Listening and giving presentations, meeting for meals and treats, and enjoying the sightseeing in Old Sacramento.
The National Genealogical Society (NGS) pulled it off with mask and vaccination requirements for each person who attended. When entering the conference center a waistband was shown to security. The band was given at checkout to show a person had received at a minimum both COVID shots plus a booster. Sticker colors on name badges showed an individual's comfort levels with others. Red-no contact. Yellow-elbow taps and fist bumps. Green-all in! Hugs and handshakes.
And? Compliance was remarkable. Never at any time did I hear anyone ask for someone to put on a mask in a classroom or anywhere else in the conference center. Did it happen? Maybe, but not where I was. Attendees respected each individual's choice of personal safety
Eating, and quick photos were the only exceptions to the mask mandate for those who were comfortable with masks off.
Can we have in-person genealogy events post covid? I feel we can. Covid may always be with us in some form, but with care and respect for others, our community has shown it's possible.
Looking forward to seeing everyone again in person soon!
