GenFriends~Lisa Lisson: Out of the Box Genealogy Tips

This week on GenFriends, we welcome special guest Lisa Lisson!
Lisa is the writer of the "Are You My Cousin? blog.
Recently, Lisa began a series called "31 Days of Out of the Box Genealogy Tips" featuring a new set of uncommon records every day.
With the help of Christine Woodcock and Melissa Barker, I ask Lisa about some of the ones on the list and we share some of our experiences with these types of records.

Which does she consider the most unusual? Watch the video on youtube and find out!

What are some of the records you have discovered that aren't the usual go-to resources?
Let us know what you found and where!

Celebration Sunday~Genealogy Happy Dance!

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone around that you found the document, contacted a cousin who has the family Bible, made a DNA connection or found a whole new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This is a weekly series to enable everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.

Share by scrolling down and adding your story to the comments section or you may also put a link to a blog post telling about what had you dancing this week.

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
Over 300 youth ages, 14-18 attended a church youth conference this past Thursday through Saturday in Charleston, SC, I was privileged to attend as a chaperone and to teach a workshop on family history!  Seven 30 minute lessons in a row!
Exhausting? Yes! Worth it? Yes!
The FamilySearch App showed us those who were related.....I found lots of new cousins!
We played with the other features of the app,  learned about some cool projects such as indexing and helping out with Findagrave and learned how important it was to learn your ancestor's stories.
I was so impressed with how many of the youth were already working on something to do with genealogy, Many came up afterward to tell me a family story or an exciting find they had experienced!
Love the next generation of family history researchers!
I will be dancing and celebrating this experience for a while to come!

What's your happy dance moment for this week?

Terri and the folks behind the scenes of Going in Depth Magazine, the IDG Blog and Academy announced with sad hearts that it was time to move on to other avenues.
Here is the link to the official announcement.

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
On July 13, 2019, the registration for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy and the Salt Lake Academy for Professionals opened.  (SLIG)
Anyone who is familiar with these two weeks of learning knows the classes fill up fast and you need to have your fingers ready to go to sign up for the classes you want.
I came late to the game since I was attending a Genealogy Workshop in Columbia, SC and wasn't sure if there would be anything left for me once I got home and was ready to register!
Luckily, I was able to take one of the last couple of available seats in Josh Taylor"s course
"You're Invited: Public Speaking from Concept to Delivery"
One of my favorite things to do is to teach genealogy methodologies and I am excited to learn new skills and get better at giving presentations to groups and societies.
As for the first week, I am currently waitlisted for two of the institute courses.
Hopefully, more spots will open up and I will be able to get into one of my top two choices.
If not, there are still wonderful learning opportunities to take advantage of!
My Happy Dance moment for this week?

Will I see you in Salt Lake in January?

Field Trip for the Grand Strand Genealogy Club
Attending the SC Genealogical Society Workshop with Keynote Blaine T. Bettinger
July 2019

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
I love genealogy events!
Anytime we can get together with others who are interested in learning about researching their families it is a joy!
The past few days, I have attended the South Carolina Genealogical Society Workshop held annually at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
The event started out with a lock-in at the Richland County Library Research room.

Research Room at the Richland County Main Library, Columbia, SC

This is a wonderful place to search for your SC ancestors!

With Blaine after his fabulous 4 presentations!

Keynote Speaker for the two-day workshop was Blaine T. Bettinger!
Anyone who has heard Blaine speak knows how good he is at explaining DNA tools and methodologies.
There were other great classes and a chance to research at the archives.
In fact, for the first time, the archives stayed open until 8pm so we had time after the last session to take advantage of all their resources!

One of the best parts of attending a genealogy event?
The people! It's so much fun to meet new people and connect with old friends!

Wouldn't be the same without Robin and Ellis!!

Always good to see Lisa!

Blaine joined us for dinner!
