Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance! Finding an Ancestor's Signature

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone that you found the document, contacted a cousin with the family Bible, made a DNA connection, or found a new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This weekly series enables everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

I love finding the signatures of my ancestors. This week, I discovered the signature of my paternal great great grandfather E. A. Hudson (Ezra Ashby Hudson) from Darlington County, SC  on a Freedman's Bueau Record. He signed as a witness for a labor contract.

Another to add to my collection!

FamilySearch

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

When my great-great-grandfather Ezra A. Hudson died in Darlington County, SC, in 1882, he did not have a will. As a result, a probate package was created that included inventories of his belongings. Many of the household possessions were sold to pay his debts. Often, family members are listed as those who bought items from the estate. His wife, Sarah Rebecca (Smith) Flemming Hudson, my great-great-grandmother, purchased several things. I have often wondered how it felt to have to buy back things that were previously yours.  One item that touched me in this inventory list is the Bible.

Sara bought the Bible. It's the first purchase on the list above.

I wish I knew what happened to that Bible.

Finding the probate package for Ezra Hudson and details of his estate on FamilySearch was a happy dance moment for me this week.

RootsTech 365!

RootsTech 2023 is over in person, but the online learning opportunities will last all year!

The Keynote addresses were recorded and available to watch, and several classes given in person were recorded and available. Many classes were uploaded and can only be watched virtually from the platform. There are so many to choose from!

To find videos you would like to watch, click here to go to the Video Library. Search for topics or speakers, and then click the plus sign to add them to your watch list.

One of my favorites is

10 Things a Genealogist Should  Do Before Leaving a Library or Archive by Melissa Barker

and another is

Shared DNA Matches-the Only DNA Tool You Will Ever Need by Diahan Southard

Don't forget to check out the Virtual Expo Hall.

Many companies are still offering conference deals; some have links to additional classes.

The Innovation Forum is available to watch and learn about exciting new innovations in genealogy.

For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there is a section of videos just for you, including the Elder and Sister Gong address on Family Discovery Day.

To view those options, click here.

Relatives at RootsTech is also still available and, at the time of this writing, will be until the end of March 2023. If you haven't checked out who your matches from the attendee list are, now is the time!

There are many ways to keep the spirit of RootsTech going all year long!

Which page will you head to first?

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

Attending and speaking at RootsTech 2023 was incredible! It was wonderful to be back in person, meeting up with old friends and making new ones. Teaching in person is wonderful when you can see and interact with the audience.  I also served as an official Rootstech Influencer, got an inside view of what was happening at the conference, and spoke with many of the presenters, keynote, and industry leaders.  It was a whirlwind few days, and I am still processing all I learned and experienced. Attending provided many, many happy dance moments!

Did you attend RootsTech 2023? What were your happy dance moments?

I would love to hear from you!
