Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance!

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone around that you found the document, contacted a cousin who has the family Bible, made a DNA connection, or found a whole new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This is a weekly series to enable everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

Last week was spent attending "In-Depth African American Genealogy" coordinated by LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson for SLIG 2021 Week 2.  It was fabulous! Case studies walked us through the process of researching the enslaved. We learned about plantation records and my favorite-The Southern Claims Commission Records.  A two-part session on researching in the West Indies was fascinating.   As usual, my brain was exploding at the end with all the new knowledge I gained as a result of this course!

Next up? SLIG Academy begins the second week of February! Always so much to learn!

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

My granddaughter Maddy joined me for a day at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston, SC. She wanted to take the "From Slavery to Freedom" Tour given by Joseph McGill as part of a research project she is working on for school.  Maddy is researching Slave Ads and was interested to learn that there are three that have been discovered of freedom seekers from Magnolia Plantation. From the tour to walking through the main house, we had a wonderful day but also felt sorrow for the events that had taken place on that beautiful property,  We appreciate the efforts of people like Joe McGill of the Slave Dwelling Project who are working hard to change the narrative and tell the whole story of the enslaved and their enslavers.

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
SLIG 2021 was a success! Moving to a virtual platform was a definite change to the yearly get together in Salt Lake City every January but the week of learning and stretching our minds was the same!

On top of being a student in Karen Stansbury's DNA class, I presented lectures in Josh Taylor's Mastering Online Searches class. My first time as a member of the faculty at SLIG was a little intimidating but in the end, I had so much fun!

Next up is SLIG Extended including workshops and events throughout the week.

Week 2 of SLIG begins on January 23rd. Can't wait for another week of learning!

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
Two fun presentations had me doing a happy dance this week!
First was a presentation for the Virtual Genealogical Association:
Becoming a Professional Genealogist: From Passion to Profit"
and second a lesson for a women's church group:
"Indexing: Helping to Gather Israel".

Each was so much fun as we discussed how to's with both presentations.
Those attending asked great questions. One of my favorite things to do is to teach various aspects of genealogy and family history.  Still looking back and dancing!
