Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance! Two Operations Reported in the Paper.

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone that you found the document, contacted a cousin with the family Bible, made a DNA connection, or found a new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This weekly series enables everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.

My Happy Dance this week?

Newspapers are fantastic resources for learning more about your family. We often look for birth and wedding announcements and, of course, obituaries.

But there is so much more to be found!

While researching my great-great grandfather's work as a supervisor for the county almshouse, I determined where he lived before, during, and after his term. I learned the nature of his job and his compassion for the people who lived there, or "inmates," as they were called. I also learned when he started and retired from the position.

Sometimes, while researching, you discover surprising information about the people you are researching. While reviewing the many articles mentioning A. W. Baker from Sumter County, South Carolina, I discovered two articles about him and my grandmother, Mary Ruth (Baker) Hudson,  raised by her grandparents, Arthur Wellington, and Martha Victoria (Bradford) Baker.

I was surprised to learn that Arthur traveled to Charlotte, NC, to have surgery performed by an Ear, Nose, and Throat Dr. in 1935, and in 1934, my grandmother had surgery to remove her appendix.

I searched this newspaper before plugging in their names, but the results were new this time. The lesson is that you should go back and search again. Newspapers are updated constantly, and search results can vary.
I love papers! What unexpected discoveries have you made while researching in newspapers?

GenFriends Genealogy Chat Show: Relative Race Season 14 Preview

The panel, Melissa Barker, Jenny Hawran, Laura Hedgecock, Shelley Murphy, Mary Kircher Roddy, and I  get together to discuss the teams who will be sharing their stories on Relative Race Season 14 and share some of our favorite moments from past seasons.

Watch as we get excited about Season 14 and walk down memory land.

Of course, as soon as we stopped recording, so many others that I should have mentioned came to my mind.

There are so many! We love all the teams from each season.

It's hard to remember who was on which season, and names were not coming to our minds...especially mine!

The teams have graciously joined us on GenFriends to share more about their stories and the race. We appreciate all of them.

Some of us have met in person, which has been so much fun!

We would love to hear from you!

My Happy Dance this week?

A presentation and an orientation had me excited to share information and the opportunity to begin a course to learn and build skills.

I was honored to be chosen to give a presentation at the UGA Summit of Excellence this week. I enjoyed sharing what I have learned about Guardianship Records. Thanks to the attendees!

Orientation for the Fall SLIG 2024 Virtual Courses was held, and I am so excited about beginning the "Death Party" course, as we dubbed it, during our breakout room with the instructors and attendees. This will be a great learning experience, and I can't wait to get started!

My Happy Dance this week?
A weekend of research, giving presentations, and cemetery visits.

Last weekend, I headed to Augusta, Georgia, to present an all-day seminar to the Augusta Genealogical Society.  I appreciate all who helped plan and make this day enjoyable for me.

Quaker Cemetery, Camden, SC

Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbia, SC

On the way there and back,  I stopped to research, visit historical family sites, and visit cemeteries.
