RootsTech 2022-A Few of My Favorite Things

RootsTech 2022 is in the books as far as the live sessions, but did you know that they were recorded and part of the video collection of presentations you can still watch?

So many to choose from! Here are some of my favorites:

African American Genealogy

African American Genealogy Challenges by Shelley Murphy walks researchers through the challenges of researching African American ancestors and the methods to overcome them.

DNA

Searching for Close Relatives with Your DNA Results by McKell Kinney helps understand how to use DNA to build your family tree, especially those close matches whether they have a tree or not.

Methodology

Your Ancestor's FAN Club: Using Cluster Research to Get Past Brick Walls by Dew Smith is a three-part series explaining the importance of incorporating the records of our ancestor's friends, associates, and neighbors to help find information and how this method can help move past areas where we are stuck.

Record Sets

Getting Around the Missing 1890 Census-Alternative Record Sets by Sarah Cochran is a two-part series that helps researchers discover records that may help you find information that would have been included in the 1890 Census.

Skill Building

How to Transcribe the Past by Shannon Combs-Bennett explains the importance of transcribing records, how to do it, and then analyze the information contained in documents.

Writing:

Workshop: Start Telling Your Own and Family Stories by Laura Hedgecock is a fun hands-on session helping to get your creative juices flowing and begin writing those family stories.

Bonus:

Diaries, Journals, and Calendars: Documenting Your Ancestor's Day- by Melissa Barker. As an archivist and genealogist, Melissa's presentations always help to understand not only how to research within a record group, but how to preserve it.

These are only a few of the videos available from RootsTech 2022 to help you build your research skills and family. Search for topics that interest you and add them to your playlist.

Don't forget all those location-specific presentations to help you understand how to research by location or nationality.

Do you have favorite videos from RootsTEch 2022?

Please share them!

And for my friends who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints here's a list of my favorite videos, especially for you.

The Promised Blessings of Family History-Helps for the Journey from RootsTech 2022

As members of the Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we have a sacred calling to Family History work.  RootsTech 2022 offers many videos to help build our skills. Several of these are directed to members of the church.  Although the event itself is over, the opportunity to watch and learn is not.

Here are some of my picks to help with inspiration, techniques, and activities as you work to find your family.

Elder and Sister Soares were the Keynote for Family Discovery Day. Their words will inspire and encourage you as you work to find your family.  You can access the link to watch here.

There are more portions to choose from to inspire you.

How-To Sessions future many choices to help you narrow down the skills you need to develop.

I'm a little partial to A House of Order: Adding Leaves to the Right Branches.

If you need help to teach and help children and youth develop a love of family history work there are many choices you can watch for ideas.

Involving Children in Family History Work: Remembering Grandparents shares ideas to keep our family stories alive and share with our children and future generations.

There are sessions for church leaders and those who have family history callings.

Does your Ward have a Temple and Family History Plan? This video will help you create one or strengthen the one you have.

Looking for activities for your family or church group? There are videos for that too!

Weekly Family History Activities-A Come Follow Me, Companion incorporates activities to enrich family history work as you study the scriptures and the life of the Savoir.

We have a wonderful resource in the free videos offerings on RootsTech.org. I hope you will take advantage of those aimed at church members, and those for the general population

Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance!

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone around that you found the document, contacted a cousin who has the family Bible, made a DNA connection, or found a whole new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This is a weekly series to enable everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.
Share by scrolling
down and add your story to the comments section or you may also put a link to a blog post telling about what had you dancing this week.
