Tombstone Tuesday-Revolutionary War Patriot

William Vaughn, my paternal 5th great grandfather was born in May of 1764 in North Hampton County North Carolina.
He served as a private in the Calvary from Sumter District, S.C. during the Revolutionary War.
From "The South Carolina Pension Report of Sumter District Residents, 1835", William is recorded as aged 80 with an annual allowance of $83.33. The pension began on 24, January 1834 and he had received a total amount of  $249.99.

A Bounty Land Application was filled out by William Vaughn on 2 April 1855 in Sumter District at the age of 90.

Obituary

“Death of a Revolutionary Soldier” Yorkville Enquirer, (South Carolina), 1 Oct. 1857, p. 2, col. 7, digital images, Chronicling America (https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov: accessed 04 May 2015)

A wonderful description of the life of my 5th great grandfather. He was admired as a great patriot:
"It is said that his hatred for the tories was proverbial, and the the mention of them in his presence, even during the last years of this life, wold always draw from him some expression of this feelings toward them."

Do you have Revolutionary War soldiers in your family history?
We'd love to hear about them!

Celebration Sunday~Genealogy Happy Dance!

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone around that you found the document, contacted a cousin who has the family Bible, made a DNA connection or found a whole new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.
Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This is a weekly series to enable everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment. This can be done by scrolling down and adding your story to the comments section. You may also put a link to a blog post.

My Happy Dance This Week:
While researching my maternal Roberts line I discovered a Revolutionary War Pension file for my 5th great grandfather Philip Roberts (1763-1854). Moving to Kentucky from SC after the war, Philip applied for a pension to help with financial difficulties in 1832. In his application, he gave his birth date and place and wrote about his service with General Francis Marion.
Also included in the file was the proof of marriage to his second wife Sarah (Hall) Daniels Roberts (1785-between 1870-1880) when she applied for a widow's pension after Philip's death.
Wow! So much information in this record. It even has his signature.
Can't stop dancing! What did you discover this week?

                                                                                           Share your discovery!
                                                                                   Let the dancing commence!

Looking forward to reading about your Happy Dance moment!

52 Ancestors Week 27~ Fighting With the Swampfox

For Week 27 of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks by Amy Johnson Crow, the blog prompt asks, " What ancestor fought in the Revolution?"
A post written two years ago answers that question, or at least these are the ones found so far.

So for this week, you are invited to click on the link and read about Fighting With the Swamp Fox.

Fighting With "The Swamp Fox"

Picture Credit: University of South Carolina Library
While celebrating Independence Day I started thinking about my ancestors that were Revolutionary War Soldiers. I remembered that I had at least one that fought alongside his famous cousin Francis Marion "The Swamp Fox".
My 6th Great Grandfather, John Marion, Jr. (1738-1780), and many others of the Marion family fought side by side with the man who is called the father of Guerrilla  Warfare.
In looking at my database, I saw several others who were of age to serve. Could they have served with General Marion?
I found this great resource online and started looking.

The Swamp Fox: Francis Marion and the Men who Served with him

I found four more:

Lt. John Frierson (1727-1797) 5th Great Grandfather
Capt. Samuel Ervin (1748-1803) 5th Great Grandfather
Henry Richbourg (1737-1810) 6th Great Grandfather
Philip Roberts (1763-1854) 5th Great Grandfather

There were others that had the same names as my ancestors, but I do not know if they are the same person. Some are last names that could be connected to my lines, but I don't have the proof needed. The names of cousins, brothers, and uncles of my people and the names of friends and neighbors appeared on the list as well. It seems that many of my ancestors, along with those they knew and loved joined up to fight for our country's freedom with "The Swamp Fox".

In 1969, The Wonderful World of Disney produced a T.V. series called The Swamp Fox. I remember watching it as a child. I didn't know I was looking at the story of my ancestors!
I need to go to youtube and watch it again.
