Celebrating Women's History Month Day 3-Unusual Names
Today's Blog Prompt from Lisa Alzo at The Accidental Genealogist :
Do you share a first name with one of your female ancestors? Perhaps you were named for your great-grandmother, or your name follows a particular naming pattern. If not, then list the most unique or unusual female first name you’ve come across in your family tree.
I was not named after any of my ancestors but I do have some unusual names to share!
My maternal Grandmother was named Azile Juanita Daughrity.
I have a Great Aunt named Asineath Baker and another named Effie Vida McManus.
A third Great Grandmother named Eliza Atiza Brazell. and one named Elvira America Booth.
A sixth Great Grandmother named Mehitable Spry.
Antoynette Williams born in 1914 in Kershaw County, SC may be a part of my Williams family.
One of the wives of a Great Grand Uncle was Posthuma Keels, a Seventh Great Aunt was named Sendiniah Cantey and a cousin three times removed named Zephra!
For some reason there are a large amount of ladies with the first name of William or Willie in my tree as well!

I enjoyed reading these names. My favorite one is Mehitable Spry!
ReplyDeleteThere was a Williams family that our Kirven family married into. I believe they were from northern SC near Mullins, though.
There will be a connection one day! Thanks so much for stopping by Mariann!
DeleteWow, a lot of interesting names there.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun looking in my data base for them!
DeleteThanks for reading Betty!
Great names, Cheri - I suspect the William/Willie women were originally meant to be Wilhelmina, but maybe not, eh?! After my mom chose my name, her father (who NEVER talked about his family) told her with tears in his eyes that it was the name of his youngest sister who died young (about 3 yrs old). She had no idea!
ReplyDeleteMaybe the William and Willie's were named that because their Fathers really wanted a boy! I have no idea!
DeleteWhat a way for your Mom to find out about her sister!
Anyway thanks so much for reading!
