Celebrating Women's History-Courage and Strength: War Widow

Blogging Prompt from Lisa Alzo at The Accidental Genealogist Day 13

Moment of Strength: share a story where a female ancestor showed courage or strength in a difficult situation.

On the 6th of October 1940, my grandparents, Gilbert Ernest Roberts and Azile Juanita Daughrity were married in Sumter, SC.

A widow at 23, Azile was left alone to raise my mother Brenda and my uncle Gil. With the help of family and friends, she somehow was able to move on her her life and take care of her little family.

  3. How terribly sad. Your grandmother Axile was a brave woman to raise those children herself, after she experienced every wartime wife's worst nightmare. My mother waited 4 years for my father to return from WWII, and she feared the worst every day. Mercifully, he returned unharmed. I am so sorry for your grandmother and relieved that she was able to raise your mother. What a lovely childhood picture of your mother!

    1. I can't even imagine what these women, and in fact all women who send love ones off to war, must go through on a daily basis.
I am so glad that your Father came home!
      Thanks Mariann!
