Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance!-Remembering Cousin Russ

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone around that you found the document, contacted a cousin who has the family Bible, made a DNA connection, or found a whole new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This is a weekly series to enable everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

This has been a hard week for the genealogy community.

We have lost a friend. Our Cousin Russ.

So, instead of a happy dance moment, I would like to take a moment and remember Russ Worthington.

Having the privilege of knowing him and being the benefactor of his generosity and friendship is what I am honoring,

I first met Russ on Mondays with Myrt as I commented and answered questions during the show. Then I became a panelist for several study groups run by him and Pat Richley-Erickson (Dear Myrtle).

I met Russ in person for the first time at RootsTech in 2015. I felt as though I was meeting a celebrity, and he treated me the same. I was honored that he knew who I was!

Over the years, Cousin Russ helped me with technology as I began my GenFriends Geneaology Chat Show. He encouraged me and even sent me a camera because the built-in one on my computer was not very good quality. What a surprise that was when it showed up in my mail! I knew I could ask him for help, and he was always willing to give it.

Russ Worthington was one of the good guys.

Someone who could be counted on.

Someone who will be sorely missed.

Things in the genealogy community will never be quite the same without his loving, gentle care.

Thank you, Russ, for being you.

Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance this week is dedicated to your memory!

  1. Love your tribute to Cousin Russ. I am not sure when I met him, maybe it was at a conference or Monday's with Myrtle. It's been a long time ago, years. I know I contacted him a few years ago, maybe five or six, before I retired, about our shared Worthington and Borden lines. He was just always around, he was one who provided so much selfless service to anyone that needed help. Even if he was not familiar with the issue, he would find out and share. Yes, he was one of the good guys, I thanked him for his service, our family and his research knowledge and skills. My friend, my cousin, you are missed so much and have left a hole in the genealogy community. it's going to be hard with our you. Yesterday, I was in familytreemaker and it was not working with me, I went to send you a message via Facebook, and just cried. Peace be unto you and yours. Love ya, Dr. Shelley! xoxoxo
