GenFriends Genealogy Chat Show: Relative Race Season 14 Preview

The panel, Melissa Barker, Jenny Hawran, Laura Hedgecock, Shelley Murphy, Mary Kircher Roddy, and I  get together to discuss the teams who will be sharing their stories on Relative Race Season 14 and share some of our favorite moments from past seasons.

Watch as we get excited about Season 14 and walk down memory land.

Of course, as soon as we stopped recording, so many others that I should have mentioned came to my mind.

There are so many! We love all the teams from each season.

It's hard to remember who was on which season, and names were not coming to our minds...especially mine!

The teams have graciously joined us on GenFriends to share more about their stories and the race. We appreciate all of them.

Some of us have met in person, which has been so much fun!

We would love to hear from you!

What are your favorite moments from Relative Race?

Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance! A Presentation and an Orientation

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone that you found the document, contacted a cousin with the family Bible, made a DNA connection, or found a new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This weekly series enables everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.

My Happy Dance this week?

A presentation and an orientation had me excited to share information and the opportunity to begin a course to learn and build skills.

I was honored to be chosen to give a presentation at the UGA Summit of Excellence this week. I enjoyed sharing what I have learned about Guardianship Records. Thanks to the attendees!

Orientation for the Fall SLIG 2024 Virtual Courses was held, and I am so excited about beginning the "Death Party" course, as we dubbed it, during our breakout room with the instructors and attendees. This will be a great learning experience, and I can't wait to get started!

My Happy Dance this week?

I love researching in historical newspapers. Many fun stories and articles can be used to connect families. To find documents to help prove a parent/child relationship, I came across an obituary of a woman who was the sister of my ancestor. In the article, it names her father and two of her brothers. One of these is my ancestor. I have many records confirming the siblings. This article shows that since the daughter named her father, the siblings were likely his children, too.
Now, I can combine the records I have previously found with this article to develop a working hypothesis about my ancestor's father.

One step closer to the proof I have been looking for has me doing that happy dance!
