Celebration Sunday~Genealogy Happy Dance!

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone around that you found the document, contacted a cousin who has the family Bible, made a DNA connection or found a whole new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This is a weekly series to enable everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

The Legacy Family Tree Webinar Friday announcement had me doing that dance this week!  I am so honored to have begun this series of webinars for such a great platform.
To be in the company of all the many great speakers in the genealogy world is very humbling!  I'm still pinching myself and probably won't stop dancing for a while!

What is your happy dance moment for this week?

Blog Caroling 2018~Feliz Navidad Mimi!

My family moved to Albuquerque, Nm when I was 16. My dad was assigned to the Air Force base there. One Christmas my paternal grandmother,  Mary (Baker) Hudson came to visit.
Every time we turned on the radio, Feliz Navidad sung by Jose Feliciano was on!
I remember how much fun she had trying to sing that song. For years afterward, she would great me with Feliz Navidad

Mary "Mimi" (Baker) Hudson

This year, my contribution to Blog Caroling, a yearly event from footnoteMaven  pays tribute to that memory of her.

Feliz Navidad,  Mimi. Wish we could spend one more Christmas together!

A Christmas Card from Pop

This post was written using this week's blog prompt "Nice" from Amy Johnson Crow's series 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.

I loved finding this Christmas card from my grandfather Benjamin Allen Hudson
(1918-1976) who we called "Pop" to my grandmother Mary (Baker) Hudson.
It was in a trunk in her bedroom where she kept her treasures.

Nice he gave it.
Nice she kept it.
Nice I found and can share it.

Merry Christmas Mimi and Pop! Wish we could share another together!

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

This arrived in the mail!
I can't say enough about this class. From the instructors to the cases and all the classmates in between, I learned so much about research tactics, the holes in my skill set and how to tackle hard research problems. Would I take it again? Yes! And if it's offered again, I will!
Yep! I'm dancing!

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
Most of you know how much I enjoy watching Relative Race. We talked about each episode on GenFriends, a genealogy chat show I host. This week we had the pleasure of welcoming #TeamBlack Joe and Jerica and the cousins they met in episode 4, Marti and Shannon.
What an experience! Joe and Jerica were just as gracious and fun speaking to us as they were on the show. Marti and Shannon were able to share the side we don't see. They explained how it felt to have two complete strangers show up on their doorstep and the immediate connection they felt.
Meeting the four of them on GenFriends had me doing the happy dance!

Here's the video if you want to watch the fun and do the happy dance too!

Friend of Friends Friday~Releasing Pomphrey

On October 13, 1787, in Monk's Corner, St. John's Parish, South Carolina, John Ryan sold a slave named Pomphrey to Lawrence Campbell, Archibald Campbell, and David Benson of Charleston.

South Carolina Department of Archives and History, “Bills Of Sale, 1773-1843” database, Fold3 (http://Fold3.com accessed 05 Dec. 2018), entry for John Ryan, volume 2Q, pg. 590 (1778)

May Pomphrey be found and connected with his descendants.

Have you discovered the records of the enslaved while researching?

Please consider sharing the documents and transcribing their names so they may be remembered.

This post will be shared with the Slave Name Roll Project.

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
Don't you just love it when you find a document helping you to find a woman's family?\
It can be difficult to locate a woman's maiden name and her parents.
Much of the problem comes from a woman not having a voice. She was often thought of as inferior to the men in her life and records left her nameless or as Mrs. Somebody.
So, you can be sure that when I found a will this week who listed the man's sisters and brothers, I started doing that dance!
In this case, I know the maiden name but have no idea who her father is. That's where the mention of her -as a married woman assuring me it was my person-is so fantastic!
From this will, I know the names of several of her siblings. A start of her pre-marriage family unit!
These clues may lead me to the parents and back another generation.
Yep, I'm dancing!
