Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance! Teaching at SLIG Fall Virtual

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone that you found the document, contacted a cousin with the family Bible, made a DNA connection, or found a new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This weekly series enables everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

Being one of the instructors for D. Joshua Taylor's SLIG  Fall Virtual course: "Advanced Techniques for Mastering Online Searches," is a happy dance moment all by itself, but I got an extra one this week after teaching the second of the Hands-On classes.  The hands-on sessions give tips and tricks for searching the big four- FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, and Findmypast, and then give the students time to go and search using what they have learned. They then come back and report what they found.  During their search time, after discussing MyHeritage and suggesting using their newspaper collection, a huge happy dance moment occurred for one participant.  She decided to try the newspaper collection for information on an ancestor and found an obituary giving her the needed facts! Her ancestor's obituary was included in a Montreal newspaper that was part of a collection she didn't know about on MyHeritage! You never know where you will find the one source that leads you to your ancestor!

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

Attending the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy course "Operation Jumpstart: Beyond the Basics of Military Research" with course coordinator Michael Strauss, AG was a whole week of happy dance moments! My goal in taking the course was to up my knowledge of researching in military records and gt some clues on finding information about the Soldiers in my family tree.  I learned so much about different types of records, how laws affect what may be available, how to work through Soldiers with the same name and how to find bounty land records. Besides Michael Strauss who is an expert on military records,, I also had the opportunity to learn from:

Rebecca Whitman Koford, CG, CGL

Lori Berdak Miller

Judy G Russell, JD, CG, CGL

Richard G. Sayre, CG, CL, FUGA

Gerald H. "Jerry" Smith. CG

All excellent instructors who gave me so many ideas on where and how to find information needed for many of my ancestors.

I highly recommend this course!

Have you had a chance to take this or another SLIG course?

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

This week was the beginning of the SLIG Fall Virtual Practicum class.
For the next 6 weeks, we will be given a genealogy case to solve.
The purpose is to build our skills using various types of research problems.
The case is presented to us and then we have a week to work on it and see what we can come up with.  We will meet back, hear how the case was solved by the presenter, and then discuss how we tackled it.  Everyone has a different way to research and it is amazing what we can learn from hearing about the research process of the others in the class.
I am so excited about the next 6 weeks and learning as much as I can!

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:

This arrived in the mail!
I can't say enough about this class. From the instructors to the cases and all the classmates in between, I learned so much about research tactics, the holes in my skill set and how to tackle hard research problems. Would I take it again? Yes! And if it's offered again, I will!
Yep! I'm dancing!

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
I did it! I completed the 5 cases for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) Virtual Practicum!
What a powerful learning experience! Never heard about it? Well, let me tell you, it's a fabulous way to test and broaden your genealogy skills. For 5 weeks, participants receive a new case and have til the end of the week to submit their summary reports It was all done online via Zoom meetings.
We had military, locating family members land, DNA, and same-named people cases. Each took at least 10 hours to solve and sometimes more!
Would I do it again? You bet! Diving into real live cases and then meeting to see how others worked through the cases was so helpful. I could see where my strengths and weaknesses are.
I will be a better genealogist from the lessons learned.  I did it! I completed the practicum nd I am doing the happy dance!!
What has been the best genealogy learning experience you've had?

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
I decided to sign up for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy's Virtual Practicum class in an effort to take advantage of some long distant learning. The class is held weekly online via a Zoom Meeting.  Last week we received our first case to work on and I can tell you I was a bit nervous about being able to keep up with the fantastic group of genealogists in my session.  This week I was able to work through the research question given, write my case summary and submit my homework.  Then when it was time to get together as a group to talk about how we worked through the case and came up with our conclusions, I learned so much from the other participants. Each of us approached the research questions in a different way, yet we were able to come to the same conclusion. Learning from the others in the class for the next month will be exciting and very educational. I could see where I could improve and feel good about the methodology I used.
If you have thought about taking an institute or any other type of class to strengthen your research skills, I would highly recommend doing so. Find something that has a hands o approach so you can take what you have learned and put it into action. It's well worth it.
Successfully completing week 1 of the SLIG Practicum has me celebrating learning this week!

My Happy Dance This Week:
My week at SLIG was amazing! I met and reconnected with fabulous genealogists and learned amazing things from Paula Stewart-Warren, Cindy Ingle, Luana Darby and Debbie Miezala. My fellow students in the Taking Your Research to the Next Level class were fun and knowledgeable. We shared many tips and experiences that were helpful to all of us.
Being the room monitor to the special events, it all was wonderful! If you have never been to the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy in Salt Lake City I would highly recommend it!

My Happy Dance This Week:
I flew toSalt Lake City and was able to spend a couple of days with my friend Annette and her family. We have known each other since we were 12!  We woke up to 8 inches of snow yesterday morning. I haven't seen this much snow in years!
Off to the first day of SLIG this morning! Looking forward to seeing so many genealogy friends and learning from the best!
