Friends of Friends Friday-Releasing Names from the Estate of John Cantey Thames: Charlotte, Leon, Anthony, Ben, Binkey, January, and Henry




When John Cantey Thames died intestate in Kershaw County, South Carolina in January of 1856 his estate was inventoried and items sold to pay creditors. Among those items listed as goods and chattel were the names of 5 of his enslaved.

Leon young man,
Sam
Anthony
Ben 
Binkey girl
January
Henry






A letter from the administrator of the estate sent a letter to the court informing them
"the estate is considerably in debt. In order to pay said debts, it will be necessary to sell one negro belonging to the said estate named Leon for cash."



An account page shows Leon being sold for $900 and the payment received from "hiring out of negros".

Releasing the names of  Charlotte, Leon, Sam, Anthony, Ben, Binkey, January, and HenryMay they be remembered and reunited with their families.

December 5~
     Mary Christine (Williams Sullivan) (1896-1930), my maternal Step Great Grandmother, was born 120 years ago in Kershaw County, South Carolina. Christine was the daughter of James Lewis Williams ( 1873-1937) and Lizzie (Pettigrew) Williams (died before 1900).

December 6~

  My maternal Grandmother, Azile Juanita Daughrity Roberts Sullivan (1921-2009) would have been 95 years old on this day. Azile was born in Sumter, Sumter, South Carolina to Manning David Daughrity, Jr. (1889-1931) and Loretta (McManus) Daughrity (1894-1936).

   Matilda C. Martin (?-1876), my paternal 3rd Great Grandmother died 139 years ago in Iredell County, North Carolina. She is buried in the Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Statesville, Iredell, North Carolina.

Sept. 29~
  
  My maternal Grandfather, Gilbert Ernest Roberts, Sr. died 71 years ago. He was killed in action on the island of Peleliu while serving in the Marines during WWII.  He is buried in Quaker Cemetery, Kershaw, Camden, South Carolina.

May 18~
 Phillip Roberts III (1798-1852), my Paternal 4th Great Grandfather, would be celebrating his 216th birthday on this day. Born in Kershaw County,SC, Phillip was the son of Phillip Roberts (1763-1854) and Sarah Kirtley (1765-1838). 

May 22~
  The 158th anniversary of the birth of my Paternal Great Great Grandfather, George Phillip Roberts (1856-1930). George was the son of Thomas Phillip Roberts (1830-1893) and Eliza Atiza Brazell (1836-1890) and was born in Columbia, Richland,SC.

  My Paternal Great Great Grandfather, Jubal Ransom Early (1888-1964) was born 126 years ago in Elmwood, Iredell,NC.
 Jubal was the son of Ransom Taylor Early (1829-1888) and Ellen Caroline Martin (1850-1926).

May 24~
  Benjamin Thomas Thames (1854-1931), my Paternal Great Great Grandfather, was born 160 years ago, possibly in the Clarendon County,SC area. He was the son of Thomas Lemuel Thames (1827-1863) and Rebecca Stukes (1830-1870).
