Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance: Conferences, Events and Friends!

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone that you found the document, contacted a cousin with the family Bible, made a DNA connection, or found a new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This weekly series enables everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.

My Happy Dance Moment for the week:
Conferences, events, and friends!

It's been a great two weeks. I was able to attend and speak at the South Carolina Genealogical Society Workshop,  and then go to an event where I listened to a friend discuss a project that is important to everyone.

In-person events are a fantastic opportunity to network, make new friends, and connect with old ones.  Learning from those who were speaking and being able to get some research done in the South Carolina Department of Archives and History was a bonus, too!

Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance! Recreating Memories in Bermuda!

My Happy Dance Moment for the week:

When I was 6-9 my father was stationed at the U.S. Air Force Base in Bermuda.

This past week, I had the opportunity to return and recreate some of those memories.

The weather was a little chilly and windy,  but my husband and I enjoyed every moment of our three days in Bermuda!

Here are a few of the places on my list to visit and remember.

Using this photo and Google Earth, I  located a home we lived in in Bermuda.
The house was split into two parts, and we lived in the top portion. From the backyard, we could see Harrington Sound.

The house next door is now blue instead of pink.

Sitting on the wall at the back of the yard was very surreal.

The Unfinished Church in St. George's

Fort St. Catherine's wasn't open the day my husband and I were there,  but we could get a photo with a cannon in the background!

Tobacco Bay looks a lot different today!

St. Peter's Church in St. George's

Front St. in Hamilton

Warwick Long Bay

The stocks look a little different and are in a new location since I was a little girl, but a fun part of visiting St George's.

Three days of memories and feeling a connection to my parents, who have both passed away.

What fun we had while living on the island for three years.

A blessing to be able to visit so many years later.

A big thank you to Eric Erksine, who discovered his biological father was from Bermuda on Relative Race season 13.  His help connecting me with a tour guide who provided transportation to specific sites was invaluable!

If you ever visit Bermuda and need someone to take you to see all the beauty of this magical place, I suggest you contact Eric's cousin, Ronue "Heads" Cann, Sr.

Celebration Sunday-Genealogy Happy Dance! Adding to My Grandmother's Story Using Full -Text Search

My Happy Dance Moment for the week:

Have you tried Full-Text Search from FamilySearch? Since its release, it has been a source of happy dance moments for me and others.

This week, I discovered a document naming my grandmother and her sisters as plaintiffs in a court case. Their mother, Loretta McManus Daughrity, took out a loan before her death and had not paid it.

Source: "Sumter, South Carolina, United States records," images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9P1-RSZN-2?view=fullText : Feb 9,2025), image 452 of 485.

This court document deals with the foreclosure of the Daughrity home in Sumter, South Carolina, and a plaintiff claiming their mother borrowed money from her before her death and wanted her money paid back out of the sale of the home.

Stories get lost if not told, and finding documents can help us discover them but also have us asking so many more questions. I talked to my grandmother many times about her parents, their home, and the death of her parents.

She never told me that the house went into foreclosure.

It sat empty for several years and then was lost to a fire.

Finding about more had me doing that dance this week?

What was your happy dance moment?

My Happy Dance This Week:
Over 40 people to attend our Grand Strand Genealogy Club meeting! We are a small club that has seen a lot of growth in the last year. There have been times when we have only had a dozen or more people.  Our board members did some celebrating as we watched the crowd coming in. A Happy Dance moment for sure!
