GenFriends~Genealogy Conferences-News,Learning, Fun and More!

This time on GenFriends, the panel and discuss genealogy conferences.
Just back from the Federation of Genealogical Societies in Washington, DC, we talk about the recent announcement of the upcoming merger of FGS and NGS (the National Genealogical Society) and what it means to the genealogy world.
Local, regional national and genealogy cruises can help you with your research skills,  connect with other genealogists, find others researching your area or surnames and are just plain fun!
We share tips such as putting together your schedule ahead of time using either the printed program or taking advantage of an app is created for the conference.

Look for what is going on in your area. Are there local or regional meetings you can attend?
If not, we challenge you to start your own!
Visit the local library or archives and see what they can do to help you!

The genealogy community is a loving, caring one! There's nothing like meeting in person with like-minded people who will listen to your family stories and research problems with no eye-rolling!!

Celebration Sunday~Genealogy Happy Dance!

You know the dance. You know you've done it. The one every researcher does after finding something new. The one where you want to jump up and down and shout to everyone around that you found the document, contacted a cousin who has the family Bible, made a DNA connection or found a whole new branch to your tree. The one that is met with glazed stares and eye rolls.

Celebration Sunday is a place to share your discoveries.
This is a weekly series to enable everyone to tell about their Genealogy Happy Dance moment.

Field Trip for the Grand Strand Genealogy Club
Attending the SC Genealogical Society Workshop with Keynote Blaine T. Bettinger
July 2019

My Happy Dance Moment for this week:
I love genealogy events!
Anytime we can get together with others who are interested in learning about researching their families it is a joy!
The past few days, I have attended the South Carolina Genealogical Society Workshop held annually at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
The event started out with a lock-in at the Richland County Library Research room.

Research Room at the Richland County Main Library, Columbia, SC

This is a wonderful place to search for your SC ancestors!

With Blaine after his fabulous 4 presentations!

Keynote Speaker for the two-day workshop was Blaine T. Bettinger!
Anyone who has heard Blaine speak knows how good he is at explaining DNA tools and methodologies.
There were other great classes and a chance to research at the archives.
In fact, for the first time, the archives stayed open until 8pm so we had time after the last session to take advantage of all their resources!

Cousin Marilyn Trevino

Cousin Guerry Felder

One of the best parts of attending a genealogy event?
The people! It's so much fun to meet new people and connect with old friends!

My roommates
Judy Lake and Kathleen Keenan

Wouldn't be the same without Robin and Ellis!!

Always good to see Lisa!

Blaine joined us for dinner!

My Happy Dance This Week:
Those of you who know me well know that I LOVE teaching genealogy classes. I love helping people understand how to begin and learn the principles of research.
This week, my Beginning Genealogy Class for the In-Depth Genealogist Acadamy was announced and I was contacted about teaching a couple of classes at the local library!
Helping people learn to climb their family tree is so exciting! Double Happy Dance for me!
