Celebrating Women's History-Timeline: From Civil War to WWII

An interesting Blog Prompt for Day 23 from Lisa Alzo  at The Accidental Genealogist

Create a timeline for a female ancestor using your favorite software program or an online timeline generator. Post an image of it.

For this time line I chose my Paternal Great Great Grandmother Martha "Mattie" Victoria Bradford Baker. Born just after the start of the Civil War, she lived until after the end of WWII.
This Time Line was produced using my Legacy Family Tree Software.

  1. This is the first time I've seen a timeline in action! Hm, from Legacy Family Tree Software. Born in the middle of the Civil War, died at the end of WWII. I wonder how much the changes of Presidents affected her life.

What stands out to me is this: She survived the deaths of six of her ten children. That must be some sort of record of endurance. I would never have seen this except for the timeline. I also notice that her father and mother died within months of each other when she was barely a teenager. And that her husband died 7 years before she did.

So much death permeated this woman's life. So I had to look at her face again. What do I see -- some hope, puzzlement, gentleness? I begin to think that 4 of her children lived . . .

    1. Thank you so much for your insightful comment Mariann! She did suffer a lot of death in her lifetime. From what I have been told, she was a sweet, loving woman.
I really like using the Legacy Timeline feature. It has several timelines that you can click on to add to an ancestors life span, like the Wars and Presidents. I only chose a few to add because it would have been really long to put on the blog. It helps me to think about what may have been going on in their lives and gives me a clue about where to look for records. I also try to add local and state events as well.
A time line really helps to see things in a different way.
